When we’re born we have no opinions or beliefs and then as we grow up, we are taught what to believe by our parents, teachers, friends, society and by our experiences.

Many of our beliefs are old, unexamined and unquestioned ideas that we may not have chosen for ourselves but we have innocently accepted from others.

We’re so attached to our beliefs that we look for evidence to reinforce them and discount anything that proves them wrong, also known as confirmation bias.

Our beliefs then become our reality and underpin everything we do, controlling our thoughts, feelings, behaviour and ultimately our results. If we want to change something in our lives, we must therefore be aware of our beliefs and consider whether these need to be changed or updated.

The good news is that beliefs can be replaced with new, more helpful ones that support our hopes for the future.

Studies in neuroscience show that we can grow new neural pathways and train our brain to think in new ways, so whatever thoughts we repeat the most often we reinforce and strengthen. The thoughts we don’t use grow weak and eventually fade away.
